DM Slide with Flavia
The popstress and producer released ‘Them,’ a synth mood pop anthem about loving trans bodies, in April. She followed it up with a visual love letter. We DM about the song, queer community and happiness.
Hailing from Ireland and Italy before becoming an LA transplant, singer-songwriter and producer FLAVIA has a natural instinct for seeing what unites us across borders and identities. FLAVIA isn’t just about buzz word causes; she holds herself to being actionable. Her song, ‘Them,’ is a warm and sensual track with breathy vocals about a trans lover. The broody, bare beat and intoxicatingly layered chorus have just a hint of childlike curiosity. The result is a sweet and sticky sound perfect to steam up windows with. Above that, it’s not written to get on a Pride playlist or a good sync option on a Freeform show, it’s the song most of us cis-people have entire playlists full; to lust to, to fuck to, to feel sexy. For trans people, this is one of few genuine and not tokenizing love letters. And when it came time to make a music video for the song, FLAVIA used it to highlight dozens of gender non conforming/nb and trans individuals. Outside of her values, her ear for pop candy with just enough bite should make her a playlist and pre-game mainstay. Her raspy but hearty vocals always perfectly wrap around a crisp and rhythmic production. Her trajectory is set to be the next electro-pop fave but that’s not what she’s here for; she’s here for them.
