Zine #10: Starring MissMyMatch
I found Déja through an Instagram story. Her fruit earrings reminding me of my mom and her garden, the adorable adrenaline she gets when she collects her crops to make dinner. My intention was to be a sweet daughter and adorn my mother like she adorns her land. Unfortunately, intentions, slip through cracks in my mind all the time. And Déja’s jewelry is the kind of eye candy (pun intended) an ADHD kid like me gets lost in. I was quickly distracted by a pair of cheese earrings; reminiscent of Lunchables and Tom & Jerry. My best friend is a multifaceted human but I can’t resist boiling her down to her intense love of cheese so they were the perfect gift. Suddenly, I went from never wearing earrings for years to having hooks filled with them. An order from MissMyMatchbecame my go to way to cheer someone up and they haven’t failed yet. But paired with her talent is an unabashed desire to explore and an incredible ambition. Déja represents consistent authenticity in the face of both growth and challenge. And even in the latter of those two times, she still maintains her incredibly generous heart. I’ve watched Déja evolve as an artist over the last year; from her dried fruit era to the beautiful flower pendants, amazing quirky and detailed earrings or abstract creations of now. And every era makes me love her even more.
