An Interview with All Things Blue
All Things Blue are back with the first single off their upcoming debut album, Chad. (And yes, they do mean Chad as in the douche bag archetype always stringing people along.) It’s a dreamy, hypnotic experience that perfectly blends early 2010’s indie pop experimentation with current/future of trance rock. Sonically, it transports you not to a memory but just a string of emotions built over the course of a decade. It’s layered,
It’s a song of a generation’s listlessness in love. A post-sexual liberation society where we’re still piecing together the fluidity of intimacy and comfort. The song encapsulates the “I don’t like this but I also don’t fully know what’s happening” vibe that all of us who (repeatedly) fall prey to fuckboi people know very well. I spoke with singer/writer India about the new track. Check out our interview below and keep an eye out for the video release, Tuesday, 5/26.
Baby Ballou: It’s so dreamy and trancey but your vocals on this track are just beyond addictive. How did it come together? And how do you choose where to inflect on the vocals?
India: Hey, thank you! Jon and I made the music side of things then I took it home to find the melody and story. I try to just feel it out so when the emotions are coming out, the vocals tend to reflect that.
Baby Ballou: what’s the meaning to the artwork?
India: Ooh, yes. These photos are from the Salton Sea which is an aesthetically beautiful, man made attraction that has become completely toxic. I wanted it to represent that thing that looks so beautiful but is destroying the more important parts of its whole, which happens on so many different layers in life.
Baby Ballou: did inspiration come from a specific person or a composite of experiences?
India: Well, I think I understood the situation as I did because of different experiences and perspectives so in that sense- composite. The song itself came to life in response to a specific Chad, though.
Baby Ballou: how do you think the lyrics hit different during quarantine when a lot of people are reconnecting with old hook ups just to fill a void?
India: I hope if anyone is reconnecting with a Chad, that they can hear the song and say “okay yes, I can be honest with myself about what I’m signing up for” or I don’t know, just ditch the thing entirely.
Baby Ballou: what has it been like releasing during quarantine?
India: It’s been great! Great and strange haha. I miss shows, like everyone else does, and wish it could be a part of the release process but people are really leaning on music and entertainment so I’m happy to see the music get some TLC as it enters into the world
Baby Ballou: if you had to ascribe a smell, texture, taste and color to the song, what would they be?
India: hmmmmm... I'm gonna go with jasmine, neoprene, natty Light and yellow lul
