Zine #13: Starring Psychic Radio
Amorphous blobs of neon melt slowly into goo somehow phasing in and out of different dimensions. Congealed fog. I see my new friend, Psychic Radio, almost like synesthesia. It’s a liquid visual, one my tongue can drink from but not transfer. I want to find a term that says multifaceted but like a conglomeration of facets all at once. The self proclaimed music artist, producer and cyber witch has a mellow majesty to her, that seeps through screens in between pixels.
Her new song, ‘The Witch,’ was released today, (5/19). From the first beat, it’s a balance of angelic and demonic. A dark, synth filled backing propping up raspy harmonies and soft tones. The track knows just when to pull back, slowly sipping at your lungs until it comes back full force slurping up your air supply. Glitchy vulnerability. This is the song that plays when the blushing bride’s face falls from a smile to a smirk; a momentary power outage in the church and suddenly, lit only by lightning behind the stained glass, she’s revealed to be the Black Widow. It’s a conquering confidence powered by pleasure and pain.
I was lucky enough to get to chat to sensuality, her new song and being a former scene kid.
Check out our convo in the below zine. My messages are above in italics, Psychic Radio’s response is screenshot within the graphic.
You’re a musician and producer, how did your journey with that begin and did you ever step away from music for any reason or has it always been a source of joy/release/etc?
Oooo what did teen you’s rockstar fantasy look like?
Ahh love it! The pop punk/“emo scene” was a predominantly white scene in the sense of who was represented mainstream and who was put on a pedestal aesthetically, did you ever feel not included or like you had to prove something?
I’m glad you did have people in your corner but it really sucks that the community supposedly of oddballs and misfits would still try to box people in to identities. How did your music taste grow from there?
I think I understand your gist by weirder artists but I think it’ll be interesting to explore more specifically because I think we’re really coming out of the era of labeling artists by sonic genre and it’s more persona and vibe and an experience. So going by more the latter, what kind of weird do you like? (My follow up question is inside the graphic this time)
How do you counter that disappointment or how do you avoid beating yourself up for those days?
What’s the aesthetic or kind of vibe of your new single and any other new art?
Ooo I like. What has your personal journey with sensuality been like?
I feel that Disney Princess view, I definitely had some of that internalized too. Was there anything or anyone specific that helped spurn you into your sensuality?
Aw we love supportive maternal figures!! What‘s one of your favorite things you’ve learned from or admired about your mom?
Oh wow, that’s really interesting. I’m gonna go back to your music but what was it like growing up with parents in law enforcement, and how (if at all) does it affect your experience with what’s happening in the country right now?
How do you feel in general about sharing your work with others? Before release among friends or collaborators and after with the public
I think sometimes people don’t really appreciate the fear and hesitancy behind an artists choice to share their music because they assume that if you want to be an artist, it should be no issue to share it. But how would you describe the cross of loving your art and wanting to share against the anxiety and insecurity of doing so
How do you come to some of these internal realizations? You seem very aware of your mind and it’s anxieties. I know for me, one way is by imagining I’m on a talk show and I get asked a question to which the answer is the realization I needed to see
Okay, I have to ask because I love it so much. How did ‘Black Brie Larson’ come together?
You know who I get a lot? Even once from her own hair stylist, Rashida Jones. I think it’s just cause we’re both short and have bangs but 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️She’s gorgeous so I’ll take it Lolol last question, what can us fellow creepy crawly weirdos expect to see - not necessarily specific projects but also just as supporters of you as an artist?
